How my time at Salford Business School has prepared me for a career in Digital Business

The first step

My decision to take up an M.Sc. degree course in Digital Business at Salford University, UK was not a spontaneous one. I had studied the recruitment trend in the Banking sector where I had a proven track record of 20 years of multifaceted work experience as a team player/team lead and saw the way recruiters were attracted to job seekers who had acquired one degree or the other from universities in the oversea countries.

With my skills in decision-making and my resilient spirit, I was fortunate to have made the right move at the right time considering the spate at which the currency exchange rate is skyrocketing. Embarking on this journey was a wise decision even though my initial intention was not to continue as a career lady after I complete my program.

Making the right choice matters

The high rate and speed at which technology is being used and transforming the world prompted me to go for a second masters’ degree oversea for my personal academic update. I was convinced that I made the right choice the first day I went on a visit to the Salford University campus.

Weeks after completing my first module, my program leader nominated me as a Course Rep. Initially I wanted to object but the trust she had in me and the courage she gave me were enough to challenge and motivate me. This responsibility reawakened the enthusiasm in me, my selfless passion to serve and boldly give out the best in me.

Meeting People

As I took up the role, other nominations came along, as international students' mentor, international students committee member, and I found myself engaging in more activities off and on-campus while I study for my degree. The University of Salford has great lecturers who are vast in their respective fields of discipline and very supportive of students to achieve success, it is resourceful and challenges students to showcase their talents in events the Uni co-organised with other organizations. The more I attended events, meetings, seminars, and workshops using my innovative thinking skills, the more knowledge and networking I gained as I connect with new people.

These meetings, seminars, and workshops have taught me to be more time-conscious, and increase my ability to meet deadlines in what I do. I have learned to value time more than before, ‘time is money’ this also spurred my time management skills.

Make yourself visible

A couple of modules in my degree course have further exposed me to blogging on the internet and the most recent of my modules is where I am being taught how to show my professional capabilities so I can be identified easily by recruiters when search engines and social media platforms are being used.

I recently participated as a team player in an event (Global week) organized by Salford University, my creative and hands-on computer skills enabled me to work with my team members to achieve success. My Team was awarded for ‘most innovative solution’ to a challenge. This has inspired me with the intent to continue my career in Digital Business after my graduation and specialize as a ‘creative innovator’.
